My name is Osman Balkan, freelance photographer from Berlin Germany.
How did you discover photography and what makes you keep on doing it?
At an early age I was painting and drawing a lot. And with time and as my work got more and more complex and I advanced a lot, I also grew very impatient. Maybe just due to puberty. But I felt like it took too much time to capture what I had in mind. So I started to use my camera more consciously for what I actually wanted to express. This feeling when you develop a film or that feeling you get when you finish a project is so immense and the feeling of having something in the making during a shooting just lifts me up and makes me keep doing it until the day I might say: “ok. I'm done!”

What do you want to show through your pictures?
Well it is a lot about honesty, fragility, reality and eventually myself. It is a matter of fact that there is always a lot personal of the photographer in a final photograph, but for me it is often a very conscious process of putting my surrounding and myself in pictures. Not neccessarily literally though. How ever strong someone might seem to be there is always a fragile core and I find it to be beautiful to see and capture that.

In your opinion, what are the characteristics of a photographer, and what differentiates it from a good photo taker?
Well thats very difficult to say as I think it is a very vivid line. I think if you are a photographer you are so driven by what you do and want to do that you dedicate yourself to it. It is your language, the only way to say something in your own way. The rest is I think a matter of taste. Some things you have to see, some things you can leave out.

Which artist would you like to work with?
There are many I'd like to cooperate with it. I like what I get from musicians while working. The interaction of music and photography has always fascinated me. So it is a general desire for diversity. But generally I prefer working with artists whose work and persona I can interpret and capture.
What do you expect from your photographic future?
Oh well a lot of things I guess. I hope that it will remain a language that gives me the ability to express things I cannot say with words. And I hope it will still be bringing me to as many interesting and exciting places it took me before.
